Current labour market data

The Analysis, Forecasting and Research Team of the Labour Market Division of the Ministry provides up-to-date labour market information and labour market databases.

At the end of January 2016, there were 424,989 persons registered as unemployed. The current unemployment rate according to EUROSTAT is thus 5.8%, signifying a rise of 0.2 percentage points compared to last year's figure.

In terms of persons, this signifies 18,750 or 4.6% more than a year ago.

Including those on training courses, 490,246 persons were unemployed, an increase of 17,707 or 3.7% compared to the previous year.

However, as in recent months the number of people in work also rose. At the end of January, 3,480,000 persons in Austria were in employment. In terms of persons, there were thus 34,000 or 1% more in work than a year ago.

Labour market databases

The BALI (budget, labour market and receipt of benefits) online database retrieval system

The BALI (budget, labour market and benefit receipt information) online database retrieval system essentially provides the opportunity to combine the data published by the Federation of Social Insurance Institutions on dependent employment with the data of the Public Employment Service (AMS).

It also contains data on self-employment from the AMS Data Warehouse as well as the unemployment rates according to EUROSTAT and population data from Statistics Austria.

The data is partially available as tables in standard format, but it is mostly in the form of flexibly definable data queries and time series. BALI is supported by the APF Team of Division VI, Labour Market, in the Ministry of Social Affairs.

The ELIS information system (Economic and Labour Market Information System)

The ELIS information system (Economic and Labour Market Information System) provides ready-made tables on the current state of the labour market and the economy and overviews of the trends in benefit receipts and the financial situation of unemployment insurance. It also offers key labour market figures and a separate collection of data on the field of foreign citizens on the Austrian labour market.

Please note: the updating of ELIS takes place on an ongoing basis depending on the availability of the underlying data. The tables which contain up-to-date monthly employment figures (General Labour Market Data, Youth, Older Persons, and Foreign Citizens) are updated when the final employment data from the Federation of Social Insurance Institutions is available (usually around the 20th of the following month).
